Survival Guide: Develop a Fire Evacuation Plan

August 13th, 2010 by admin

A fire evacuation plan is needed during fire emergencies.  Fire causes panic because we are too aware of its danger.  When people are unprepared for such an eventuality, they become more at risk.  Panic causes chaos, which could increase the number of casualties.  It can also be debilitating for some, preventing them from acting the way they should such as getting to safety as fast as possible.  What needs to be done is to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of everyone concerned and it includes preventing fire from happening and preparing for it in case it does happen.

Fire happens in an instant and it can spread just as fast.  This is the reason why smoke and fire detectors are important to have installed in strategic places.  It would warn the occupants of the danger and would give the occupants some time to flee from danger.  Someone should be in charge of calling the fire brigade.  In buildings and schools, there should be a fire evacuation plan in place for a fast and an orderly evacuation.  This is done to avoid panic.  If people know what to do and where to go when they hear the sound of a fire alarm, it would lessen the panic one usually feels during such an event.  There should also be a plan to help senior citizens and those who have physical disabilities to get to safety.

In a fire evacuation plan, there should be different escape routes that everyone is aware of.  A diagram or a map of the escape route should be posted on every floor of a building.  There should be emergency signs as well so that people would know where the exit doors are located.  During fire emergencies, electricity is usually the first to go to prevent electrical fires and causing further damage.  When everything is dark, it would be hard to find your way especially if there is too much smoke in the area.  It is important that emergency lighting be in place to help you get to safety.

Fire drills are important.  It should be done regularly and everyone should participate to better prepare themselves in fire emergencies.  In schools, there should be someone in charge for every class that would lead everyone to safety.  There should also be a designated place where people would congregate.  It has to be a place that is far from the danger and should not obstruct the fire brigade from doing their job.  The one in charge should also check the attendance of the class and make sure that everyone is accounted for.  Should anyone be missing, the fire brigade should be informed.  Nobody should go back to the classroom unless the fire brigade gives the go ahead.

Firefighting devices would come in handy when there is a fire and people should undergo firefighting training to know what to do.  They should know

What kind of extinguisher to use on a particular fire.  The person should also know how to use the fire extinguisher, as it would be helpful especially if you need to use it when the way to safety is blocked by fire.
