The holidays are not yet around the corner but the need for holiday fire safety tips are practical all year round. This is to ensure that all homeowners are well reminded about guidelines on this matter whether it is the holidays or not. Here are some holiday fire safety tips to get you in the mood for the festive season that will be here with us after just a few months.

Christmas Tree

Choose a freshly cut tree that have green, pliable, and firmly attached needles. Place your Christmas tree far from heat sources and combustible items like curtains, furniture, and couch. After the holidays are over, dispose of the tree properly by taking it to the recycling center or by having a local community pick up service get it. Never dispose your tree by burning or putting in the fireplace.

Holiday Light Decorations

Check holiday lights and other electrical decorations regularly to ensure that they are kept in top working condition. Inspect carefully for gaps in insulation, broken sockets, frayed wires, and overloaded electrical outlets. Never leave them unattended as well. If you are leaving the house or going to sleep, turn off the decorations. Be sure to use only decorations that are flame-retardant and non-flammable. Also, do not install them near heat sources or heating vents.

Candles

Candles are also commonly used during the holidays, may it be for decoration on the tables or around the living area. Just make sure that you trim the wick of the candles regularly, place them in proper candleholders, and never leave them unattended to avoid fire accidents. Most of all, never place the candles on the Christmas tree to light it up.

Fire Safety Equipment

Whether it is Christmas season or not, do not forget to have the right kind of fire safety equipment installed in your home and to maintain these devices properly. For one, there should be smoke alarms installed in every level of your house. Test and clean them regularly. Aside from that, you should also have powder and CO2 fire extinguishers located in strategic areas of the house. CO2 extinguishers are ideal because they are the safest to use for fires that involve electrical appliances. Powder extinguishers meanwhile are practical because they can effectively put out three classes of fire, namely Class A (wood, paper, clothing), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class C (flammable gases).

Fire Training Drills

Since fire training drills should be done once a year, Christmas season may be the best time to do it so you do not forget about it. These drills are crucial to prepare people for the possibility of a fire and so that they know what to do in case of an actual fire outbreak.

Holiday fires are quite common. With all the lights, candles, and cooking buzzing all around and the fact that people are too busy merry making, fires may start without people noticing it. This is why, it is important to remember the basic holiday fire safety tips to enjoy the festive seasons without having to worry about the possibility of a tragic fire accident.
