Fire Fighting Equipment to Install in your Business

June 4th, 2010 by admin

Having a business certainly beats having a day job. In your own business, you get to enjoy many perks. You get to be your own boss, work at your own pace, and have a flexible schedule. Not to mention, you also get to earn more especially if your business is doing really well. What you earn from a business is something you will not get to earn from a regular office job. It is a good thing you decided to take this plunge and get out of that 9 to 5 work that has seemed like a prison for you for many years.

But this is not to say that having a business is entirely a bed of roses. There is a host of responsibilities that you have to oversee as a business owner, and one of the most important has to do with fire safety. Installing firefighting equipment is the first step in this endeavor. Here are some of the devices that you should have in your business.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are the first response to fire outbreaks as they can curb small incipient fires before they grow out of control. It is a must that you have the right type of extinguisher for your business to provide utmost protection and safety.

As you probably know, extinguishers come in different types, all of which are designed to put out a certain type of fire. For example, if your business is a wooden furniture shop, then you should have water fire extinguishers installed. These extinguishes are designed to put out Class A fires which involve solid organic materials like wood, paper, clothing, furnishings, and so on.

If your business has something to do with electronics like if you own an electrical appliance store or a computer shop, a CO2 fire extinguisher is most ideal. This extinguisher is the safest to use for fires involving electrical equipment.

For food businesses like catering service, coffee shops, fast foods and restaurants, wet chemical fire extinguishers are most suitable. Wet chemical fire extinguishers are what you should invest on. These extinguishers are made to put out fires that originated from grease, cooking oil, and fat fryers.

Fire extinguishers should be placed in strategic locations like near exit points. Never have them installed near flammable liquids, combustible materials, or electrical fire hazards.

Smoke Alarms

Regardless of type or nature, all businesses should be installed with smoke alarms. The number of smoke alarms would depend on the size of your business place. The rule of the thumb is to install at least one smoke alarm in every level of the building. Two or more may be needed for larger spaces.

Sprinkler Systems

For large business places, fire extinguishers may not be enough. You must install a sprinkler system that should be periodically checked by a professional plumber to ensure that it is kept in top working condition.

Whether you are a business owner or not, fire safety is not something that you can ever take lightly. For your business, be sure to install the right fire extinguishers and safety devices that will provide utmost protection for your employees, customers, and business. Moreover, have your staff undergo fire training so that they would be well aware on what to do in case of an actual fire outbreak.
